I'm running a beige G3 desktop as a file server on my home 10 mbps network consisting of several PC's and Mac's. The system is running 10.2.6 at 266 Mhz and has 256 mb of RAM. I use Sharepoints to assist in serving files to both the PC's and Mac's. It accomplishes this feat via samba for the Windows machines and afp for the OSX machines. From the beginning I've been able to detect a noticeable 2-5 second dropout in MP3's played on the Windows machines. The dropouts don't seem to occur with any regular interval, but just every now and then say every couple or three songs. The dropouts do not occur at all when I use the Mac's to play the MP3's, which leads me to believe the problem has something to do with samba. I also have some experience running a Linux file server system with the same problems, but it was on a much slower computer. I know it was possible to tweak samba on the Linux machine, but I no idea of where to begin on an OSX machine. I looked at all the settings for Sharepoints but could not find anything relating to this problem. It's not the end of the world if I cannot fix it, but it is very annoying and I would like to say that a Mac can do what a PC can! (I had the file server setup on a 233 Mhz Windows PC before moving it to the Mac and it worked fine for both Windows and Mac's when I had it on that system.) I would appreciate any and all suggestions you might have pertaining to this problem.

Long shot - but make sure the interruption doesn't coincide with a HD spinning up/down. I've found that sleep modes interrupt a lot of things.

Maybe see if you can increase the streaming software's buffer size, to get it over any pause in samba etc. ?

Just guessing,
- Dan.

Thanks Dan, I use Winamp to play MP3s on the PC and I used to know how to increase the buffer, but since they've updated so many times I've lost touch with that program. Will have to do some more reading on the subject. As for the HD, if that were the problem it seems it would affect how they play on the Mac as well, wouldn't it? My fear is that the problem has something to do with the overhead of OSX running on top of it's Unix underpinnings, much like how Windows runs on top of DOS. I think if I could figure out how to tweak the samba settings it would give me a leg up on the problem. Samba has similar packet buffers that need to be increased I'm sure.

Just a message from Doug...
