Out of curiousity, have you tried zapping the PRAM?  Turn on the machine,
and hold down Command-Option-P-R until the machine has beeped 5 times.
Release the keys and let it boot.  See if that has cleared it up before you
do something drastic like reformatting and reinstalling.
