I'm not sure. It's been a long time since I did an install of OS X
below 10.3, but istr that the "BSD Subsystem" was an optional install
at one point. This would include pico, I think. I do know it's the
editor all the magazines have always suggested to use for beginning
unix hacking.
Also, only one person has mentioned it not being there. I wonder if
something got messed up on his system.

And that someone would be me. Just to clarify, my beige file server is
running 10.2.6 and I doubt if I installed anything extra being as I was
trying to get it to run on a smallish HD. That may be why it wasn't
there. In any case, it is there now and I'm glad. I hate emacs and
vi!
