'' Actually vi makes quite a bit of sense -- to me at least, who learned touch typing in high school -- if you think of it as a virtual representation of a typewriter; the command mode is like when you stop typing content, & start moving the ball (or carriage, if you're thinking manual) around to go to a different place on the page. Then you go back to append or insert mode. It's got virtual white-out, & virtual cut-&-paste. And you don't have to use those tricky finger combinations with the ctrl key (which is awkwardly placed for that on contemporary keyboards anyway).
