The HD in question is about 6 years old (but seldom used). I looked closely at the jumpers when I tried to connect it to the ATA bus of the beige G3 MT. There is a jumper setting for "Master", there is a jumper setting for "Slave" but none for "Master Only". Besides, when I interpret the documentation of the G3 MT I have at hand correctly, the G3 MT doesn't care whether a drive is Master or Slave as long as it is the only/single drive on the ATA bus.
