Hi

I have just installed a high speed USB card in my Quicksilver G4. The system profiler can see it, and describes the vendor name as Apple Computer Inc, but it doesn't seem to work when I plug anything in to it. I am running 10.3.9. Is there some kind of driver that must be installed? I can't seem to find anything on the system CDs.

Take it back, it's not compatible, unless you really DID buy it from Apple...in which case, take it back it's broken.

This is what mine looks like in System Profiler:

USB High-Speed Bus:

  Host Controller Location: Expansion Slot
  Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBEHCI
  PCI Device ID: 0x00e0
  PCI Revision ID: 0x0004
  PCI Vendor ID: 0x1033
  Bus Number: 0x43

It's a no-name card, they said it was Mac Compatible on the package, and so it was.

OS X is a monolithic OS, that is device drivers for everything is installed by default; it's not like OS 9 where drivers were installed according to the hardware present.

This way the OS X System folder will work, as is, on any Mac that OSX runs on. Some programs won't get installed if hardware isn't present, scuh as DVD Player, but, for instance, my G4 has the Bluetooth and Airport drivers installed, and an option for networking via them, even though I've got no bluetooth and no airport card.
