I also like the Seagates because of the 5 year warranty. True, a
warranty doesn't help your data if the drive dies, but I would like to
think that they put a little more thought into product longevity than
companies with shorter warranties. Margins on drives are small and
every return costs them the profit on some number of drives.
The Seagate 750 GB PATA drive shows up at Frys (frys.com or
outpost.com) for $110 pretty regularly. Right now (this morning) it
was $160 or $200, but it will be $110 again if you wait a week or a
day or a month. On Memorial Day weekend (beginning of summer) it was
$100 both on line and at the B&M stores.
The Seagate 500 GB PATA is bouncing between $80 and $110 at Frys. So
don't buy it when it is $110 unless you need it right now or like
spending extra money. Some times they offer free shipping. The 500
GB external (USB only) Seagate is often $100 these days and the
external with FW and ESATA even dipped down to $100 a few weeks ago.
For the G5, the Seagate 1 TB SATA drive was $160 at Frys a couple of
weeks ago. I don't know if it will go there again soon, but it has
certainly been at $170 (169.99) pretty regularly, so do not buy it at
$199 or $249, which is where the regular price seems to be.
