What you describe sounds 'normal'.

If you had more than one bootable system, you would see that one of  
the icons was 'darker' than the rest. This would indicate that was  
the one currently selected for 'booting'.

Since you don't have other Icons for comparison, the problem MAY be  
that your external isn't selected (even though it's the only one  
available).

Try 'clicking on that one icon, If you see it 'darken' in  
appearance,  then that was probably the problem. Click on the 'Right  
Arrow' box (Return may also work at this point).

Then IF it refuses to boot up, your system on the External is Foo.
