PM G4 systems make great file servers!

Your LAN speed is the most critical.  If it's too slow then using the 
network'd volume becomes annoying.  100 Mb ethernet gets annoying. 
GigE is nice.  My housemates WILL NOT use any wi-fi to talk to the 
shared volumes - just tooooo slow.

Use Tiger and SharePoints.

By default OS X only wants to share Private folders.  SharePoints 
lets you share anything easily, manage groups, etc.

No problemo.  And if you find that the rendering process is being 
bogged or taking over too much of the computer, you can renice it 
(change its scheduling priority).
