Certainly, the machine losing its preferred boot drive would be an
immediate indication.

A second indication would be the machine losing its preferred network
address (if connected to the 'Net through a router, and the network
address doesn't begin with 192, and, instead, begins with 168, then
in all likelihood the preferred network address is no longer being
retained in PRAM).

Both of those are checked, and are programmed before the time server
can be polled for the current time.

On Intel boxes, not necessarily Apple Intel boxes, but ones which are
capable ... with help ... of running MacOS X, a weak PRAM battery
also causes the mobo to lost all its internal settings, such as boot
drive polling sequence (CD/DVD drive, first hard drive, USB memory
stick, etcetera), processor speed setting, etcetera.
