The machine in question is a Quicksilver Dual 1GHz, running 10.4.11.
I do not shut it down. I just quite all running programs and put it
to sleep each night. It is set to wake itself each morning and run
some backup routines. After a little checking yesterday, I did
discover it had not run the backups for several days. I am assuming
it was not waking because of the weak PRAM battery.

I have not had any network problems with it. It connects to a router
via ethernet cable. This machine runs my cash register and credit
card processing software. The credit card software automatically
connects itself to the internet each morning when I wake the machine
and launch the cash register software.

Other than an occasional restart after a software update, that
machine is never shut down or even restarted. It is on a large APC
battery backup specifically to keep it from needing to be shut down
even in a power failure.
