Modern browsers like to do things on their own...

If you've any pages/tabs loaded, their javascripts, java, and flash 
continue to "run" even when that window isn't frontmost.

They also do things like updating their fraudulent website signature 
database, from google.  And update the RSS feeds you've created...

Not unless it's creating a noticable impact on your "active 
experience".  Most of the stuff is done in background lower priority 
threads...
