Sorry, did not make myself clear. Bus powered means that it gets all  
needed power from the USB cable. The power port is PROBABLY there for  
when you use it with an unpowered USB hub.

Try plugging it into one of the usb ports on your Mac directly, not  
through a hub and see if it works then.

If it does, then you have a couple of options:

1) Get a hub for other peripherals and leave it plugged into your Mac.

2) Get a powered hub that provides extra power for the USB ports.

3) If it works on USB only, my bet of a Samuel Smith Taddy Porter, is  
that it uses 5v. That is the voltage provided by USB cable. This  
would be for when it is used with an unpowered hub.
