I just checked the space on my large HD (I have two in my MDD G4) was was surprised to see I only had 25G free on a 200G HD. Then I saw all these files from backups.backupdb. Are these the time machine files and do I need to keep them all or can I trash the ones that are over a year old?

Trash whatever date and back that you feel is no longer viable. Or they'll just start drpping of as the drive gets too full.

I thought TM took care of things automatically ... got rid of the oldest to make room for the newest.

Probably better to read up on it in the TM Help or ask on Apple Support under the TM Forum.
