FPM RAM (Fast Page Mode) was named to distinguish it from regular (Async) DRAM because you could read memory in full pages, not just one byte at a time. The later EDO (Enhanced Data Out) RAM basically pipelined requests. And all ram prior to SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) came not in DIMMs (Dual Inline Memory Modules), but SIMMs (Single Inline Memory Modules).
