I've tried both a FW400 and a FW800 cable to the G5 Mac

Are you sure the FW is working on the G5? I've heard of several G5's where the front FW port quits, and I think if the rear FW port quits it's both the 800 & 400 together. I'd try plugging the drive into another Mac or computer with known good FW. It seems more likely to me that this is a FW issue rather than a dying HD issue. Normally unplugging the FW drive and cycling the power to the drive and plugging it in again will mount a drive. It that doesn't mount the drive, you can try cycling the power while it's attached. If that still fails, start checking the for faulty FW hardware. If you ever attempt to plug in a FW400 plug inverted, I CAN fit and WILL short out the port, so be sure of the orientation BEFORE attempting to plug and FW400 device or you'll likely short out your port and perhaps your device also.
