If you can find the lid switch and trick it to think the lid is on, then perhaps, but the G5 fans are pretty noisy and most modern HDs are pretty quiet, so you might not hear right.
Since the G5 has two SATA cable sets, it might better to switch to the other set of cables and see what happens?
