1. I’d say go for Tiger or newer. Lots of software require Tiger or newer, and Tiger is faster than Jaguar or Panther.
2. Leopard or Tiger? Speed depends on which programs you use and is subjective anyway, so it’s hard to say if you’d be satisfied with Leopard’s speed. This may not be legal, but I would: borrow Tiger (10.4.11) and install that, because it’s quick and simple. Then see if you like the speed with your favourite programs. Subtract about 30%-40% from that speed and you’d have a rough gauge of the speed under Leopard. In fact, Leopard is not that much slower, but I’m trying to guess the difference between a used-for-some-time Leopard and a fresh Tiger.
