<http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24068> seems to say that with File Vault you are always talking to a disk image that was likely established with a maximum size.

Thank you, Doug. The irony here is that in order to disable FileVault, I am being asked - well, required - to create more space in the Home folder (43 or 48 GB or something) than its max capacity (40 GB). Talk about a bind.

It's official. I hate FileVault. "Oh, cool. Encryption!" How stupid was I?
