There is about 10 gigs left on the drive. I was thinking about getting
a second hard drive.

I run the disk utility, and I usually go straight to repair disk
permissions. I have MacJanitor. Is that program not good enough? I did
have OnyX but I took it off my drive. Maybe I need to go get it back!
