It shouldn't "just quit", there should be an error message saying it "quit unexpectedly" and offer you some options to "Ignore" or "Send Report to Apple". If you select the "Show Details" under the "Send Report to Apple" it will show you the crash log for Software Update. This can give a clue as to the problem.
I'd Safe Boot by holding the Shift key at startup. Then run the "10.4.11 PPC Combo Update" that you downloaded previously. Should work.
