Hi Charles, I have played with those guys on ftp before. Most of them use a physical chess board and simply relay their move to the other person. This works quite well, and can be done with messenger or any other text chat program. I can tell you from personal experience, the guys on ftp are very good and if you are new to chess, they will wipe the floor with you with no remorse. I reccomend KChess if you are looking for an excellent and accessible chess program, though online play is not an option as of the version I have at least. Good luck.
