In most old school games, there really wasn't a restriction on a pattern of
jumping, except for your height. When playing Mario, you could say jump to
the right, then hold down left as you reached the highpoint of the jump, and
theoretically land right back where you started. Not really realistic, but
definitely classic. You could also jump straight up by pressing the jump
button, but then tap right and move slightly to the right. That was the way
James put it in originally, but as I haven't played the demo yet, I can't
comment on which is better--your method, or his.

Technically, that is not a bug, but I am looking for ways to reform the
jumping. How about just jump by pressing space? And it will jump in the
direction you are facing?
