Actually it didn't seem to affect my encumberance. Of course I'll probably drop it off at my place in Trithik. The only problem there is that you can't just pick up the amount of gold you want later when you decide you need money. As for the new Durnsig quest, if you go to the Sryth forum and check the thread in Sryth General entitled An Adventure in Durnsig or something like that, there is a set of directions.
