Well if you don't want a battle you can flee it.
Be aware that grinding is part of this game you need to do this to level
up your chars and units.
I always train units evenly because I am a starter but even so, grinding
is part of this and a lot of japanese fighters.
You need at least 2 really strong units with transformations and its the
only way to handle it then as you go just traid on and on you go.
It takes a bit but yeah if its a waste of your time you can run away
from it.
Fights are the only way you can get cash unless you find it.
Actual battles where you meet and get challenged its to the death and
you can't flee.
On the other hand you will get special items to progress, special keys,
bonuses, cash and other usefull things.

I just did a VM of Windows 10 on my Mac and the game runs good.
I tried the demo for a few minutes and then went and bought the game.
