Hello Gabe,
First, as for DirectX it can't be ported to Mac, Linux, or FreeBSD
without Windows emulation software. If a game developer wants to target
those platforms he should use something like SDL, (Simple Direct Media
Layer,) which runs on Mac, Linux, and FreeBSD. For universal audio
support across multiple platforms a game developer should support OpenAL
which runs on Windows, Linux, Mac, FreeBSD, etc...
Second, As for professional work most requests these days are for online
based stuff such as coding a web page for someone in html, php, etc. The
other type of professional jobs out there are for working with SQL
databases, or write front ends for those sql databases. In either case
business apps aren't hard, but are pretty boring compared to writing games.
For example, I'm looking at a possible part time job right now for a
local church that wants to go from local church to one that has it's
material broadcast all over the internet. My job description will be
registering their domain, coding their web site from scratch, and
basically get the entire online system for that church running. I'm not
certain that I will be getting that contract yet, but if I get it that
will be what I will be doing professionally for a while.
As for landing a full time job as a programmer they are difficult to get
at times. For example, the AOL office around here was hiring Java
programmers for their Linux servers, a job I felt i could have probably
done, but they ended up hiring someone with 12 years of experience. So
programming jobs can be quite competetive. Those with the most
experience and degrees behind his or name is more likely to get the job
than someone younger, less experienced, and with less degrees.
Now, please, let's close this topic about me personally. At least two of
you have asked about my personal life on list, and I answered publically
only to forestall future questions, and or having to write each of you
off list personally.
