  You can indeed sometimes find a good tactile puzzle.  I'm not meaning a 
jigsaw, but ones that are somewhat three dimensional in nature.  I've got 
for examples one of those sliding puzzels that you can mess up.  Like the BG 
15 puzzle game.When it's finished it's a spider.  Another is a puzzle you 
open and it's about 20 various shaped pieces, and a framework to end up 
looking like a square.  This one actually has about 15 different ways it's 
able to be finished.
  Having said that the trouble is finding them.  Over here I've found them 
mainly in toy stores or novelty shopps.

Well, while I am out shopping I will keep my eyes and ears open to new
possabilities, but unfortunately I haven't seen anything that fits your
description of a good one person game or puzzle that is accessible out
of the box, and is not computer related.
You might be better off buying a gift card, music cd, dvd, or something
else. <Smile>
