SPOILER SPACE Actually what's probably happening there is that you're landing on the skull which, as has been stated before, will kill you instantly no matter how much health you have. The only thing you can really do about that particular skull is avoid it to the best of your abilities, since your first swords are a few rooms ahead yet. If that means taking a hit or two while you try to time your jumps then so be it. You do have a potion after all. You just have to time your jumps a little more carefully on the way back. Notice the stone stairs just inside that door? That's the way forward, but you'll want that first torch for later in the level.
