Hi,
As with most skills and spells, the success ratio is determined by how well
you know it. So if you put only one practice in it and it requires 4 to
become very good, then you will have roughly a 21% chance of it working. If
you, however, put 4 pracs in it you would have a lot more chance.

retreat has never done any good for me at all, indeed I'm a little sorry I
wasted a practice on it.
Whenever I type retreat I get "you yell reatreat! and wait for an
appropriate moment, but it never comes" run seems far more efficient, though
it does help to know that word of recall can be cast in combat.
I suppose I could also try peace if I want to stop a battle too.
