I aggree with you tom.
I know a person, a local admin that doesn't use antivirus, spyware
firewalls or even updates anything because it would be damaged by the
updates or software.
His view is that its all coman sence, and you just turn everything
off when not using it.
Though in a perfect world I'd aggree with him I couldn't be bothered
doing that.
Though seriously he is probably correct.

Hi Dark,
Well, in terms of Windows 7 verses XP the local directory structure
has been redesigned and makes more sence. Rather than music, videos,
pictures, all going into your My Documents folder all of them are
separate in your Home directory.
For example, on Windows 7 my home directory is c:\Users\Thomas. Under
c:\Users\Thomas is Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, and
so on. Therefore if I click on the Thomas icon in the Start Menu all
of my documents, music, and videos are organized logically anyway. I
see no need to put my music in c:\Music when I can bring up the Start
Menu, cclic on the Music icon, and go directly to
c:\Users\Thomas\Music instantly or click on Thomas and then on Music.
As far as the issue of choice you can still choose to put your files
anywhere you want them if you disable security features like User
Account Control, but it isn't the safest thing to do. The entire point
of Microsoft restricting your c: drive from general use is to protect
it from unauthorized users and from malware. What you see as an issue
of choice Microsoft sees as an issue of security. Sometimes choice and
ssecurity aren't compatible, and this is a case in point.
I might add that putting all of your faith in antivirus software etc
is a bad idea. That isn't the only kind of security threat you have to
worry about. Several years ago, back in the Win 98 days, I remember
hearing about a rash of attacks where people were prowling chat sites,
and once they found someone, they would get the other persons IP,
login to their PC, and steel their personal data or destroy their data
for kicks. The internet is a nasty place and if you think you put
software x, y, z on there and are safe think again. There are all
kinds of ways for people to hack into your internet connection and
whipe your drive before you even know what hit you. The more layers of
security you can put in place the less likely you will be a victom of
cybercrime. That's the reason for UAC and the other things Microsoft
is doing.
