The reason why I would prefer not to have mounts is to allow OS definitions
to work without having to modify behavior according to the hypervisor used.
To the best of my knowledge, so far we have managed to do that and allow
LXC to run with existing definitions. Automatically mounting disks might
make a big difference.
1) is indeed not the best idea - apart from additional privileges, there is
also the question whether we could ever have proper migration if the
instance relies on maj/min numbers.
I agree mounts are the likely winner, and implementing your proposal as-is
would be fine as the security concerns make it an option Ganeti should have.
