They don't say much about it, but they know about the issue.  Here's a
changelog entry related to it from sm5:

  [BA] smartctl: Added a warning message so that users of some IBM
       disks are warned to update their firmware.  Note: we may want
       to add a command-line flag to disable the warning messages.
       I have done this in a general way, using regexp, so that we
       can add warnings about any type of disk that we wish...

   While S.M.A.R.T. offline scan running in background, a read error
   could cause a potential failure. This is corrected with current
   microcode.

You can do a firmware update to fix it, but I'm pretty sure that has to
be interactive which makes it really suck if you have many (I've got
50-60 in our cluster).
