There are a number of projects out there for monitoring and alerting aside from Nagios e.g. Mon ( http://mon.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Download). Even though adding this "functionality" seems like an easy task this could easily suck up all your time. There are many things that are a lot more close to "core" Ganglia.
I can provide a simple PHP script that I use with Nagios that can be easily "retrofitted" to send out alerts.
