Definitely!  I think you might find the Maxima and Axiom projects
interested in this work, as well.  Axiom needs a replacement for the
commercial NAG libraries it left behind when it became open source - I
don't know how well R fits into that but certainly it would be of
interest in any case!  Please keep us posted!
