One system worth developing would be to conduct the (gaseous products) of 
pyrolysis, "burning without oxygen" passing this "smoke " through a high 
temperature reactor such as a red hot "heat exchanger" heated by the exhaust 
manifold of a fully loaded internal combustion engine,then subjecting this 
heated stream of tar bearing smoke through a high frequency electro magnetic 
field. thus forming an ionized plasma with the use of domestic micro wave 
magnetron/s
The posibility of  water shift reaction for enriching the gas with hydrogen in 
this area is high, also any condensate would resemble ethanol rather than tar. 
The micro wave enclosure must be made with refractory and screen with metal 
,the gas  inlet and outlet screened with the same material as used in the door 
of the microwave oven.
Because there is such  enormous waste heat available from an ICE. the pre 
heating of distilled water into super heated steam is easily obtained, which 
will cancel endothermic reactions of water shift when added to your gas stream.

# Support for this simplistic answer is based on the fact most gasifiers 
producing low tar woodgas seem to operate with a high reaction zone

the least amount of char. This is accomplished in the Imbert Style of gasifier

but, just in case,

Greetings, Jai, and list members.

Reducing tars in gas output, is really quite simple, design a gasifier
that works correctly for the desired feedstock is the main method,
however, you can also design a poorly built gasifier, and use many
cleaning filters after the gasifier, in the gas output pipes.

But really, one must understand what "tars" are, and at what internal
temperature the gasifier runs at, once this is known, then the design
can be re-designed to achive the correct temperature to reduce the
tars BEFORE they enter the gas output area.

In other words, generally 2 or more gasifiers must be built (or the
original one modified) to the point of acceptable level of tars within
the gas output.
