Think about this. Jerry eats every two hours and has about 1/4 cup of food.
I eat every 2 hours and eat anything I want. I consume about 2500-3000
calories a day.
And, once you get used to it, running is FUN!
Oliver

Hmm... drugs, huh? I'm game! I'll talk to my dr and see what he says. He may
nix it cuz I don't have any health problems other than being fat. :-(

The basic formula is simply that I eat significantly less. I try to avoid
fried foods or at least eat a small portion. I also try to eat something
about every two hours. It might be just an orange or a bowl (small) of
cereal, a little dried fruit or a few almonds. I try not to let myself get
hungry.

It has not been all will power, however. I have also been taking a drug
called Byetta. It is a drug to control blood sugar. However, it works very
differently than most diabetes drugs. Instead of making you gain weight
like actose and several other diabetes medications, Byetta does not have
this reaction. Instead it tends, in most people, to cause some very minor
stomach discomfort leading to reduced appetite. In higher dosages, it often
causes nausea. In fact, the recommended dosage for most is 10 mcg. Neither
my wife nor I can tolerate that dosage. The 5mcg dosage is adequate for us
both. I am not diabetic, but I am (was) getting close. My wife, who is
diabetic, has been losing weight for several years since she began to take
Byetta. She has been able to cut back significantly on her other diabetes
medicine as well. Both my wife and I share the same internal medicine
doctor. In fact, we both see her at the same time-my wife for her diabetes
and me for my follow-up from thyroid cancer (going on 13 years as a
survivor!). Last summer when my blood work showed a creeping level of my
blood sugar to the high side of normal, I asked the doctor if I could try
Byetta. She said that it has not yet been approved for weight loss but
since my levels were rising, we might try to get it by the insurance
company. We did and 45 pounds later, she had no problem with renewing my
prescription.

Two important points. First, the Byetta does not cause you to loose weight.
It does however, help you have the will power to reduce your portion control
and make healthier food selections. Second, and this is the most exciting.
We were gone from Dec. 10-Jan. 10. During that time we were on a cruise for
seven days eating very good food entrees and even better deserts. In
addition, I had 24/7 access to the yogurt ice cream machine which I managed
to visit several times a day (with just a small portion, however). After
that, we chowed down on fried shrimp, fried soft-shelled crabs, BBQ, etc. I
also had cheese grits just about every morning. I did not worry about my
diet except for trying to control my portion size (except for the cheese
grits and soft-shelled crab). The bottom line after eating what I wanted, I
only gained 3.6 pounds. (I expected at least double that.) I might also
add that I ran out of Byetta for the last week + of the trip and I was still
able to control myself.

One more point. I have NOT increased my physical activity. This weight
loss was not due to exercise. I know that I should do more and that I would
be much healthier, but I have not been able to discipline myself to make
time. I hope to do better this year, but in the meantime, I want to lose
about another 20 pounds.

This was probably a bit more of an explanation than you might have wanted,
but my experience might offer some encouragement. If I can do it, many
others can as well.

Blessings on you all and happy new year!

Jerry

Percy Harvin's injury was not a high ankle sprain as reported (or at least
not just one). It was actually a hairline fracture. Percy disclosed that
this morning in Miami.

This makes his effort more impressive and the actions of that mindless
defender who grabbed his ankle after the play more grievous.

I had to watch the game in a hotel in Virginia and thankfully the clerk
avoided putting anyone on either side of me. My wife said she was afraid my
yelling and cheering might bring an unwelcome call from the front desk. God
is good!

I am heading home and will be back on Saturday evening. This has been the
longest vacation I have taken since my parents drove to California and back
during the LBJ administration.

I have attached three pictures of my wife and I doing the wedding for my
daughter.

Go Gators!

Jerry
