A South Carolina football recruit was arrested this week in Florida on a marijuana charge.

Running back Ben Axon was arrested Wednesday night by Bradenton Police and charged with marijuana possession with intent to sell. The Manatee County Sheriff's Department says Axon was released Thursday after posting $2,500 bail.

Axon had originally pledged to Clemson, then rethought his commitment after the midseason departure of Tigers coach Tommy Bowden last fall. Axon was wooed by Florida State, West Virginia and Purdue before finally signing with the Gamecocks in February.

South Carolina athletic spokesman Steve Fink says coach Steve Spurrier was aware of Axon's situation but would not comment.

Axon played at Manatee High school. His best year came when he rushed for 1,026 yards and 16 TDs as a junior.
