IIRC, this all stems from a Sports Illustrated article from the early 80s
that showed that teams with black in their uniforms had a higher winning
percentage. The theory was that it made them more intimidating. As a result,
it has been used (and over-used) to show how rough and tough a team is.
Personally, I think it leads to thuggery.

 

If someone reads the whole article, they will see that basically the entire
swing in the statistics came from the performance of the Pittsburgh Steelers
and the Oakland Raiders in the 70s. Ultimately, SI concluded that there was
no real correlation, and pointed to the success of the early 70s Miami
Dolphins as an example that it is the team that matters, not the team's
colors.
