Dang, that's bad news. And I was going to buy a vuvuzuela to take to sporting events, weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs.

University of Florida professor of audiology James Hall and two other researchers found that the volume of the sound produced by a single vuvuzela topped 130 decibels. In a paper published in the South African Medical Journal <http://www.samj.org.za/index.php/samj/article/viewFile/3697/2681> , the researchers warned that multiple vuvuzelas could produce hearing loss. "Until investigated further, it can only be assumed that if a single vuvuzela emits a sound that is dangerously loud to those in at least a 2-metre radius, the cumulative effect of numerous vuvuzelas, typically blown together for the duration of a soccer match, may have an additive effect, putting spectators at a significant risk of noise-induced hearing loss," the paper said. The vuvuzela has provoked controversy during the World Cup, as television viewers have complained that the noise is a distraction. But South Africa, host of the international soccer competition, fought to keep the horn as an important part of its tradition - a fact that the researchers acknowledged in the paper. "The vuvuzela has reached iconic status and should be kept as part of the South African soccer culture, but measures to protect spectators' hearing must be considered of paramount importance," the paper said. -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us
