O'Leary, a senior and one of the nation's best tight ends, was suspended two games Wednesday morning by the Florida High School Athletic Association for making an obscene gesture after Dwyer's controversial 26-22 loss to Cleveland-Glenville in the nationally televised Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic at Ohio Stadium on Monday.

Please, would someone with a passing knowledge of what "obscene" actually means call the director of the Associated Press or whoever is in charge of the creation of euphemisms and explain that "shooting the bird" is not an obscene gesture.

There are some gestures that could be construed as obscene but, as Greg Marmalard would say, "decorum prohibits listing them here."

The middle finger is not one of them. It might be insulting, impudent, taboo, possibly even profane, but not obscene.

Nice article here discusses whether the First Amendment protects the digitus impudicus:

Heck, its uses goes back to ancient Rome. Perhaps O'Leary was a student of world history. If so, he should remind his mom to keep an eye on her cow.
