When native Floridians say South Florida they usually mean Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties.
It's not a geographical definition; it's a cultural definition. There is 'Old Florida' and then there is 'South Florida.' The definition may be broadening to include the Fort Myers area of the SW coast due to recent rapid growth and immigration. These areas include high levels of immigrants from other parts of the country and foreign countries. Much of this growth has occurred since the invention of air-conditioning, which I well remember. Key West is part of 'Old Florida,' but you may be right that it is Caribbean, like many of 'Old Florida's' coastal fishing villages. A.
