No, you are not missing anything. Just add this to the list of many
mistakes we made in this game.

Subject: [gatortalk] Endzone

On the pass into the endzone, why didn't the defensive back just tackle the
receiver? I think the worst that would have happen was that it would be a
penalty of half the distance but it would have taken time off the clock and
they would have had to kick a field goal since they would not have had time
to run another play.
Am I missing something here?

I completely agree on our not seeing the fake. When they called that
timeout, I recall wondering why they would do that... then the light came on
and I started yelling at the monitor, "Watch the fake!". It is completely
unimaginable that our coaches wouldn't see the same thing. Heck, I'm not an
expert and it seemed obvious to me. I mean, this particular fake they do is
like our jump pass. They pull it out two or three times a year in just this
type of situation, and the timeout was a dead give away.

On the free timeout while under review, that was indeed unfortunate, but I
think the replay rules solve more problems than they cause. In this case, it
was just our bad luck that it worked against us that way. I guess I'd be
more incensed about that, and the bad fake punt call, if I felt that we had
outplayed them and that we really deserved the game. In my mind this loss is
all on the coaches.

I'm also a bit more relaxed than in earlier games because now I can finally
just accept that we're not a very good team this year. They're still my team
and they still have my full support, but I can finally stop worrying about
polls and national championships and just take it one game at a time. It'll
be interesting to see if we can beat Mullen.

his career, and - even if successful - would merely have given LSU overtime
on the road against a loud raucous crowd. It seemed obvious that Mile would
try to win the game in regulation.

think that LSU was out of time outs at that point, having used its last to
set up the fake previously.

clock and LSU would have spiked the ball on first down; leaving it three
tries (and not a lot of time) at the end zone. There is also the outside
change of a penalty on the offense for not being set, improper alignment,
too many players on the field, as often happens when one tries to run to the
line of scrimmage to spike the ball and stop the clock.

importantly, LSU no longer had to waste first down on the spike - giving it
4 shots at the end zone instead of 3.
