I hate being lumped in with Criminoles and Scumicanes as a college
football team of entitled thugs, druggies, and university-sanctioned
villains. I was disappointed to read that we did NOT kick Cam off the
team, and would have allowed him to remain a Gator representative
(i.e., active player), and that it was Cam's choice to leave UF. Some
traffic violations, public urination, and even a non-escalated scuffle
at a downtown bar seem to me to be common enough among all students,
that they can be accepted (corrected and atoned for while remaining on
the team) when committed by a football player, but theft is clearly
wrong and not a part of the college maturation process, and so
shouldn't be acceptable among university representatives (football
players) who get held, and should get held, to a higher standard.

If we're saying that we wished he had NOT been involved with theft or
accessory to theft, and that we'd love to have a Cam Newton with a
clean record performing for UF today, then I'm sure we'd all agree.
But I'm not a subscriber to the Bowdenesque "I'm raising them as my
own children" school of college football coaching, and I wish there
were more evidence that we have high moral standards for our current
football players.

I know there are many who don't agree with me, and as a parent I do
believe in second and third and fourth chances, so I hope that sharing
my contrary opinion on GatorTalk for friendly discussion and rebuttal
isn't taken as offensive.

Cheers,
   GatorGene
