We were on very similar wave length but not exactly the same, Jerry. I don't think there is any reason to direct criticism toward the circumstances of the child's conception, planned or unplanned. I believe the better way to say what was intended was that Haywood was charged with domestic violence that was upgraded to a felony when it was discovered that the crime was committed in the presence of a child.
I happen to be the mother of a child who was planned, has a father - legally and truly... to whom I was never married. It makes me bristle to hear any child "born out of wedlock" described as "illegitimate". My son is the most legitimate kid you've never met, and his father and I are pretty dang legit, too. ;-) As far as terminology goes, I don't particularly like to describe my son as "born out of wedlock". That sounds like he's missing something, and he is not. He has a mother and a father who both love him beyond reason. There is really no reasonable justification for setting a child like him apart from any other "legitimate" child, especially since children do not choose the circumstances under which they were conceived. Labels are better for soup cans than they are for people. :-P I told you this belonged on THEFT. ;-) Cee ----- Original Message ----- From: Jerry Belloit To: gatortalk@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, January 06, 2011 4:13 PM Subject: RE: [gatortalk] Athletic Director Comparisons I was driving South all day yesterday and my Gator in-box was full of email and had not read them all when I replied. I see now that Cee and I were on the same wave length. I think that any adjective that refers to the child will be problematic, especially when the real criticism is directed toward the parents assuming that the baby was unplanned. I believe a better way to say what was intended was to simply say that the guy had a fight with the woman in front of a child that he had fathered outside of marriage. The child is not responsible for the poor decisions of his parents. (S)he is legitimate. Hmm. Surely there must be a term that is not pejorative to the child yet allows the poor decision making ability of the parents to remain an issue for discussion.
