Dear friends,

Wishing you all a very happy ‘Friendship Day’. Here
are some of my thoughts about ‘Friendship’ on this
occasion. I hope they give you some food for thought.
With best wishes.
Yours
Sameer,
Friends India

Friendship

Friendship is the best of all the human
relationships. It is because friendship is always by
choice. One can not choose his father, mother,
brothers, sisters and all the other so called blood
relations, whereas one can always choose his friends
according to his likings. Even in case of husband and
wife there is certain amount of compulsion inherent in
the relationship due to the social and even legal
sanctions but a friendship is never bound by any
compulsions except your own personal and emotional
ones. One’s parents and other siblings, howsoever bad
or inimical they may be, one just can not disown them,
they are there for the life. But in case of a friend
once he is no more a friend you can always cut him off
completely. The basis of a friendship is love and
trust (faith), once they are not there the friendship
withers away but blood relationships remain imposed
upon you even without any love or trust.

Who is a friend? I don’t believe in the old
adage that ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed’. A
friend knows your needs and will like to help you in
that, if he does not, then there might be certain
compulsions for him to do so. I feel a friend is a
person with whom you are comfortable, the more
comfortable you are the better friend the other person
is. I know of the couples who have been staying
together for the last thirty-forty years but they are
never comfortable with each other. They are certainly
not friends. Your best friend is a person with whom
you can share everything even your ‘self’.

Friendships need to be cultivated and nursed
with care for life. One single careless word uttered
in haste and in anger may destroy a friendship built
over the years. Do not take your friends for granted
and never take liberties with them, there is always a
limit of tolerance. Friendship broken is like a glass
broken, the glues may be able to join it together
again but the cracks will remain. The best way to win
over your enemy is to make him a friend. In the same
way a friend turned hostile may become one’s worst
enemy. It is the nature’s law and very often true that
people whom you do not like, do not like you either.
If you sing and smile people around you will also
sing, smile and support you.
As knowledge begets more knowledge and money
begets more money, friendships also enable you to gain
more friendships. You can improve your chances of good
luck and success if you widen the base of your
friendships. Chance favours only the prepared ones and
a person with more friends certainly has better
chances of winning success.

Your happiness and success in life is closely
linked to the attitudes and actions of others towards
you and to a great extent they are the reflections of
your own attitudes and actions. The world is like a
mirror and gives back to every man the reflection of
his own attitudes and actions. Frown at it and in turn
will look back severely upon you; smile at it and you
get back all the smiles. Give the world the best you
have and the best will come back to you.

It will be befitting to mention here the three
pairs of legendary greatest friends. Krishna and Arjun
from Mahabharat, Achilles and the Patroclus from the
Homer’s Iliad and Alexander the Great and Hephaistion;
they all have been the greatest friends known to the
posterity. Krishna did everything possible to help
Arjun to win the great battle of Mahabharat. When
Abhimanyu’s son Parikshit was born dead, Krishna said
if my and Arjun’s friendship is true then this infant
should come to life and in vindication of that great
friendship that infant became alive.

In the Geek legend, Achilles and Patroclus were
the great friends and during the Trojan War when
Patroclus is killed, Achilles, to avenge the death of
his friend, kills Hector the Prince of Troy and
shortly afterwards gets killed himself too during the
sack of Troy.

Alexander and Hephaistion became friends at the
age of fifteen and remained so throughout their lives,
and fought almost every battle together. Throughout
they lived like one soul in two bodies. Once he
mentioned about Hephaistion, to the Queen mother of
Darius the Great of Persia, that he too is Alexander.
Within three months of the death of Hephaistion
Alexander too died.

Love and friendship are the greatest gifts of
God; if one is fortunate to have them then one must
preserve and protect them at all costs.
