GnatBox supports CF with an IDE (Not USB) controller. Specifically, hw
furnished by GB. You might investigate that support as the basis of the
system you want to configure.

My current client is building an appliance based product. We tried hard to
use USB-flash drive in lieu of a CD for development installs (and perhaps
eventually for manufacturing. Even though we can boot from USB CDs, we
weren't able to get a USB flash drive to boot. Hard to spend much
debugging time debugging boot problems with inadequate tools when all we
were saving was the time to periodically burn an install CD. I digress
here just to point out that USB flash boot is problematic for more than
GB.
