Not sure if it defaults to -fpic, perhaps just with explicit -fpic? Are you ok with dropping the Regression tag (or, just xfailing the testcase on *-darwin* for now with a reference to this PR) - as it really doesn't seem to be a regression, if the testcase ever didn't crash, it was by pure luck that it clobbered something that didn't result in a visible failure immediately.
