bug not present when compiling with Clang 3.0

(I've found clang to often have more thorough/readable diagnostics than gcc)

output of clang -v:
clang version 3.0 (tags/RELEASE_30/final)
Target: x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
Thread model: posix
