Indeed invalid.

If you _really_ want to do something like this, you can do

  integer :: i(4)
  integer :: i1, i2, i3, i4
  equivalence (i1,i(1))
  equivalence (i2,i(2))
  equivalence (i3,i(3))
  equivalence (i4,i(4))
