It seems that when the desired version of gcc is in /opt/gcc, the mach build system used by firefox needs LDFLAGS=" -L/opt/gcc/lib" - that allowed it to build. I'm not sure how to close this as 'invalid' or 'user error' - I could mark it as 'resolved' but that would be misleading.
